Global Network of Advanced Management in Jakarta, Indonesia by Christoph Meyerhof

Indonesia is represented in the GNAM by UniversitasIndonesia, Program Studi Magister Manajemen. The Universitas Indonesia is the most prestigious, respected and biggest university in Indonesia. As the world’s fourth most populous country Indonesia provides a huge market for companies and start-ups. With more than 70 million internet users, the country attracts a lot of start-ups in the e-commerce market. Therefore the theme of this year GNW in Indonesia was “Local Start-up, Local Heroes”. The focus was set on company visits, meeting key decision makers and pro-environmental activities.

On the first day the Magister-Management faculty organized panel discussions about local start-ups, financing start-ups and the food industry. Due to the panel discussions we learned more about the creativity of the Indonesian entrepreneurs and how companies withstand the strong competition by using technology. During the week we visited the most successful start-ups in Indonesia which established themselves as the leading players in the e-commerce market, for exampleTokopedia and Indonesia’s largest online community Kaskus. Furthermore we had the chance to have dinner with the CEO of gdp Venture, one of the most influential venture builder in the Indonesian consumer internet industry. The program was completed by a 3 day trip to APRIL, an international holding which is famous for their “PaperOne” product. We had the opportunity to visit their paper mill in the amazing rainforest of Sumatra. We also participated in out-door activities to learn more about harvesting and reforesting in a region located on the Equator.

Besides the focus on business, we toured through the city of Jakarta by using “Go-jek” (a local motorcycle taxi), did sight-seeing of the historic city center with their colonial buildings and enjoyed the varieties of the delicious Indonesian cuisine.

We witnessed a young and dynamic market with a lot of opportunities for start-ups. Moreover we experienced first-hand that the social responsibility of companies towards their employees and the society are playing a crucial role in a successful business. The program helped me to become more aware of myresponsibilities as a future entrepreneur. I would particularly like to thank all the organizers in Jakarta and the Renmin Business School for giving me the chance to participate at this year GNAM in Jakarta. The openness and kindness of the Indonesian people and the other participants left an everlasting image.
